Introduction

In October 2019, the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) finalized a rule that includes new regulations for leak detection systems (LDS), which affects most pipeline operators.

The new requirements extend the use of LDS while allowing flexibility for operators to apply the rule in their chosen method. While it will affect some operators in a way that requires massive updates, many believe that they new regulations will create a safer pipeline industry.
